How Do I get an Agent?…

“How do I get an agent?” and “How do I get signed by an agency?” are my two most FAQs from students and aspiring models on social media. My inner psyche always responds with, “Ease up there baby tiger.” There are some things you want to be calculative about. Choosing who represents you is one of them. Note: I insinuated that you choose them and not the other way. Once, you begin to rock with that mentality, you will begin to position yourself to have the best possible options to choose from. Got it?

Now that you are investing in yourself through plenty of practice, research, studying and possibly class. Ask yourself the following questions:

Am you serious about modeling? If so,what kind of modeling would you like to pursue? What are the aesthetic requirement for this type of work?

Once you’ve answered these questions, you now have the ability to focus your work in that area. Research models who are working successfully in your preferred niche of the profession. Follow them of social media and lurk as far down as you can. Backtrack their journey. Listen to them on podcasts and watch their interviews. Create a folders of their modeling work on your email, laptop, Pinterest, Instagram or where ever. Study, apply, begin to cultivate your own style. Develop yourself as a personal brand and this is how attract the right team to you. In addition to development, promoting yourself works too. Posting on social media, talking about your work at school, your job, and attending networking events e great ways to start. Lastly, put your art in front of professional eyes. You can find a school in your area, casting agents, creative directors, literally whoever you believe can give you an unbiased opinion. A professional who can tell you what you need more or less of is invaluable. After review and a few tweaks, go for it. Apply, submit, walk-in, set up appointments, etc…

Before I leave you tonight, I have to make a statement. Can you just start applying, submitting, setting up meeting and all without considering any of this information? Why, yes! This post is not to discourage anyone in any way. It is to help you all move strategically and intentionally, so you do not end up wasting your time or involved in something that you do not like.

A Quick Wanna Be 101

So.. you’re from a little bitty country town in South Louisiana or some place with one stop light and you imagine yourself walking the catwalks of New York, Paris and Milan Fashion Week with lights flashing and famous photographers shouting your name. Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating a bit but essentially you want to model, right? Starting small is a practical way to find out if it’s what you really want. ‘Cause  guess what? As cliche as it sounds, many parts of modeling are gritty and require hard word and discipline like any other professions.

In other words, we ain’t talking about a 9-to-5. Modeling requires 24-hour dedication, it’s a lifestyle. This could potentially mean a clean and consistent diet, working out (hard) on a daily basis, detailed (possibly long) skincare routines, regular maintenance on hair, nail, and shaving. Basically, your aesthetics from the  crown of your head to the tips of your toes will need to at its best as humanly often as possible. Why? It’s because you are own business that must readily render services whenever requested. No one wants to be “caught slippin.”

For real though…

I’ve said all of this to say that if you are serious, you’ve gotta commit your time even to the little pieces of the puzzle create the big picture. If it’s one thing I’ve learned in my two years of modeling seriously, it’s little investments everyday have a bigger pay off in the future.

A Manic Mannequin

So I’m sure folks are probably wondering what’s up with my blog’s name. Like… what does that even mean? Is this girl okay or should we call somebody?

In all honesty, I’m involved in quite a bit of activities. I’m a model, songwriter, instructor, pupil of acting and theater, and now a blogger. I’m always popping from one town to the next, working, net-working and bonding with my loved ones. Sometimes I have so much going on that it overwhelms me. However, creating and recreating stories allow me to express the many emotions I feel in such states and keep me upbeat and positive. So, there it is. No, fascinating story of how I’m battling schizophrenia or anything devastating. I’m simply involved in many things plus you have to be a little crazy to pursue modeling in South Louisiana.

What’s Shakin’, Sugar?!

Why, hello there and welcome to my blog Manic Mannequin. This is my take on mostly all things modeling in the south, specifically Louisiana. As a model in the American southeast market, I definitely experience some unique challenges but also many advantages like food, art and opportunity. This is much like a documentation of my journey into exploring the world of modeling in South Louisiana. So hold on tight because it’s going to be a bumpy ride!
